- Internal heating
Internal heating means that the heating element (such as heating rod, heating plate, etc.) is directly located inside or near the cartridge or tobacco material, and transfers heat to the tobacco material through direct contact or close-range radiation.
The internal heating method has the following characteristics:
High heat utilization: Since the heating element is in direct contact with or very close to the tobacco material, heat can be transferred to the tobacco material more effectively, reducing energy loss.
Uniform heating: Internal heating methods generally heat tobacco materials more evenly because heat is diffused from the inside out, helping to reduce problems such as burnt flavors caused by uneven heating.
Compact design: Internally heated heating appliances tend to be more compact in design because there is less space between the heating element and the tobacco material.
However, there are some limitations, such as internal heating methods that may place higher demands on the durability and cleanliness of the heating elements, as direct contact with tobacco materials may cause wear or contamination of the elements. In addition, the internal heating method is more likely to cause uneven heating.
Therefore, in order to solve the cleaning problem, Philip Morris International encapsulated the heating piece in the cigarette cartridge and launched the electromagnetic heating IQOS ILUMA, which quickly became popular all over the world. However, judging from the current situation, the problem of uneven heating still exists.
- External heating
External heating, also called circumferential heating, means that the heating element is located outside the cartridge or tobacco material and transfers heat to the tobacco material through thermal radiation, thermal conduction or thermal convection. This method of heating typically involves a heated chamber in which the tobacco material is placed and heated.
Circumferential heating has the following characteristics:
Avoid direct contact: The external heating method avoids direct contact between the heating element and the tobacco material, helping to reduce wear and contamination of the element.
Easy to clean: Since the heating element is located on the outside, the space between the heating chamber and the tobacco material is relatively large, making cleaning and maintenance easier.
High flexibility: The external heating method is more flexible in design and can adapt to tobacco materials of different shapes and sizes.
However, it also has obvious limitations. For example, external heating may require longer heating times to ensure that the tobacco material is fully heated, because the heat needs to be transferred through air or other media. Also, heating uniformity may be affected by the design of the heating chamber and the way the tobacco material is placed.
As global health awareness increases and consumers' acceptance of new tobacco products increases, the HNB market will maintain continued growth, and HNB technology will continue to develop in a more efficient and energy-saving direction.
